I started a topic on
THE ZELDA PROJECT FORUMS on the breed of Epona! We are beginning our research in finding the perfect Epona for the Hyrule Field/Lon Lon Ranch shoots, and we'd like to get the opinions and input of the fans! Head over to the forums and let us know what you think! Zelda fans are extremely particular about everything, and we are no different, so we felt that a little bit of fan interaction with us, and your opinions on what kind of horse you think we should rent for the shoots would be fun!
While personally I know nothing about horses, I have read many times in threads of the past that most people consider her either a Belgian, or a Clydesdale/Quarter Horse mix. If you had to find the perfect Epona in real life, what kind of horse do you think she would be?
I've seen so many pictures people have taken, trying to compare and contrast it with Epona. Most pf the time the horse it a Haflinger.
Haflinger horses are commonly a little smaller than your average horse, and have a pure white mane and tail. Their coats vary from light brown toa dark rosey; or sorrel color.
I'm not Nintendo, but I'm 99% sure.

Haflinger, unquestionably. They're a sporty type of draft, definitely draft horse but not all bulk, still capable of running and jumping, but got the fluffy draft feet... And ALL Haflingers come in flaxen chestnut, the color which Epona is most likely to be. Just take a look at these pretties:

Hmm, I mostly think that Epona is a Flaxen Chestnut... Of course, there are other colors to consider, you could get into the silver dilutes which is a whole 'nother cup of tea, but silver dilutes usually never get such a rich red body color...
Here's another Flaxen Chestnut, this one is apparently a Gypsy Vanner:

Lots of dye/photoshop will be needed in order to get her colors "true".
As for a breed, I would go with a fresian. They're the perfect blend of bulk and lithe ability. The issue is, their body coloring is nearly always black. If you can find a light colored fresian who's owner is willing to let you dye him.her, you're all set to go!

However, if it's a question of obtaining the right breed of horse that looks like her I was try and do just that =/
