The sword and shield analogy would refer to the respective parts being a team against any form of opposition, and the sheath of said sword would be the solace for the sword from the rigors of battle and the like. Malon and Link are meant to be together and Zelda is more of a partner in battle to protect Hyrule, rather than a lover.

I think the sword a sheath reference may have a double meaning. This is great though. I always figured it would be a Link and Malon mixing; at least in OOT.
